A theoretical study is presented of an acoustooptical modulator based on anisotropic diffraction of light. Expressions are obtained for the basic characteristics of the modulator and their dependence on the parameters of the acoustooptical cell is analyzed. It is shown that the modulator performs best when the light is incident on the cell at the Bragg angle, close to zero. Questions regarding the optimum design of the modulator are examined.
