摘要
Chemically collapsed phases of SmS invariably show the coexistence of divalent and trivalent ions. The valence ratio observed by XPS is in reasonable agreement with values inferred from systematics of the lattice constants. The ″nomagnetic″ behavior of the 4f-shells can, in this case, be described by the model of Hirst. In the Tm-monochalcogenides spontaneous ICF are present at ambient conditions. While TmTe shows only paramagnetic behavior with theta //p congruent 0 K, TmSe with theta //p equals minus 33 K demonstrates that, despite ICF, ″magnetic″ behavior can be observed. Following the model of Sicardi et al. One would infer that in TmSe the Stoner criterion, rho //f(EF) multiplied by (times) U (eff) greater than 6, is fulfilled. Hund's rule correlations are well preserved within a 4f-shell showing ICF, demonstrating clearly that the mixing interaction with conduction electrons does not affect the ionic nature of the f-shell.
