This paper reviews the development of hard materials used in cutting tools, drilling and mining tools, and wear parts. Part 1 discusses the development and trends in cemented carbides, cermets, ceramics, and diamonds, used in cutting tool applications. Part 2, to be published in a forthcoming issue, will focus on the use of hard materials in drilling and mining tools and components requiring high wear resistance.
