SURFACE CHEMISTRY AND FLOTATION OF ZINC OXIDE MINERALS: I - FLOTATION WITH DODECYLAMINE.

A study has been made of the surface chemical properties of the zinc oxide minerals smithsonite, hemimorphite and willemite in the presence of aqueous solutions of dodecylamine. Measurements were made of the electrophoretic mobility, flotation response and amine adsorption characteristics of the minerals. The results show that the minerals are negatively charged at pH values of about 5 (measurements could not be made at lower pH values because of the dissolution of the minerals) and that under these conditions dodecylamine strongly adsorbs. The suggested mechanism of dodecylamine adsorption is coulombic attraction to anionic sites on the mineral surfaces and the formation of hydrophobic associations.
