Australian industry and physicists

The necessity of increasing the extent of research and development in local industry, as a nation grows above a critical size, is analyzed. The special kinds, and the importance, of the contributions that physicists can make to industrial research and development, are described. An outline is given of a university department which aims to promote the application of physics in Australian industry.
