New Class 474/874 trainsets for Hamburg S-Bahn

In April 1994, Deutsche Bahn AG and the Linke-Hofmann-Busch/Asea Brown Boveri consortium concluded a contract for the development end supply of an initial number of 45 Class 474/874 three-car units for Hamburg S-Bahn, which was later on extended by 58 more units to a total number of 108 trainsets. The Hamburg S-Bahn fleet, consisting of 169 old Class 470, 471 and 472 trainsets with an average age of 33 years, is thus undergoing a fundamental renewal. The Class 474/874 units are the first S-Bahn trainsets of Deutsche Bundesbahn AG using three-phase drives with energy feedback and industrial water cooling of the power supply components for passenger compartment heating. The article describes the mechanical part and the electrical equipment of the trainsets.
