On the basis of examples taken from a few coal mines of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, a method for determining the surface density indices of faults in the rock mass is presented. A classification of the degree of tectonic disturbance of coal deposits is suggested on the basis of a quantitative assessment of the faulting of the rock mass.
