India to begin construction on air-defense ship

India plans to begin constructing its first indigenously designed 37,500-ton air-defense ship (ADS) at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The 225 m-long and 58 m-wide Project 71 vessel, for which Rs 32.61 billion has so far been allocated, is expected to be complete by the year 2012. The ship will operate 12 MiG-29K multirole fighters together with eight locally designed light combat aircraft and Sea Harriers. The vessel will be powered by four General Electric LM 2500 gas turbines, producing an optimum speed of 28 kt and a logistic endurance of around 45 days.
