Proper operation and optimum performance of a plant's heating-ventilating-air conditioning (HVAC) system depends largely on various types of automatic dampers. Failure to maintain these dampers properly can result in excessive operation costs because of air leakage, and component problems, including collapse of large damper assemblies and heating/cooling coil freezeups. This article discusses how to analyze and correct deficiencies in damper operation to conserve energy. It covers damper operation, performance characteristics, leakage testing, and corrective measures.
