A kinetic model for the first bleaching stage of hardwood kraft pulp mill operating at 100% substitution of chlorine dioxide for elemental chlorine is presented. From the unbleached kappa number, chlorine dioxide charge and reaction time, the model predicts kappa number, brightness, chlorine dioxide consumption, and residuals after the first bleaching stage. When 100% chlorine dioxide is used, hardwood pulps are harder to delignify than softwood pulps.
