Challenges and requirements of ventilating sealed office buildings

This paper examines the concept of ventilation; briefly reviews some of the published material relating to a sick building syndrome; compares some overseas ventilation codes with the current edition of AS 1668 Part 2-1980; considers the effect of pollutants of outdoor and indoor air on the ventilation of buildings; and mentions the distribution of air and control of temperature and air movement as factors affecting the satisfactory performance of ventilation systems. It concludes that an increase in the outdoor air supply rate for offices is appropriate; and that the recommended increase should have a negligible effect on energy consumption under Australian conditions.
