Cupolas with an extended combustion zone (ECZ cupolas) are used to melt iron. According to this study, ECZ cupolas provide metal at 40-80 K higher temperatures and at 25-30% higher melting rates than single-row cupolas. The blast pressure in the ring mains should be 50-100% higher than in cupolas with a single row of tuyeres.
