The plan for the descent of the spacecraft Venera 13 and Venera 14 included a stage lasting about 10 min during which the descent stage (DS) would be let down by parachute. The parachute system was designed in such a way as to ensure a prescribed period of DS passage in the cloud layer of the atmosphere of Venus, and also to ensure separation of the elements of the heat-shield jacket. To solve these problems, and with a view to minimizing the weigth of the parachute system, the authors chose a double cascade system, including a withdrawal parachute (WP) and a brake parachute (BP). The aerodynamics of this stage of the descent is examined.
