An elastic plane strain solution is obtained for the transverse flexure of a symmetrically loaded strip foundation of finite width in frictionless and continuous contact with a homogeneous half-plane. The edges of the strip are either unrestrained or rotationally clamped, and both vertical line loads and partial distributed loads are statically applied. The basic integrodifferential equation is formulated in terms of the slope of the strip, and then reduced to a linear Fredholm integral equation with a non-singular kernel. Accurate numerical results are obtained in the form of Chebyshev series, and illustrative distributions of displacement, slope, bending moment, shear force and contact pressure are shown for strip foundations of give relative stiffness.
