On the crystal structure of Ba3Ln4O9 (Ln ≡ Dy, Er, Y/Yb)

Single crystals of Ba3Dy4O9 (1), Ba3Er4O9 (2) and Ba3Y2Yb2O9 (3) were prepared by the high temperature CO2 laser technique. X-ray investigations showed rhombohedral symmetry; the structures are solved with trigonal space group C34-R3; 1, a = 6.129 angstrom, c = 25.282 angstrom; 2, a = 6.086 angstrom, c = 25.077 angstrom; 3, a = 6.077 angstrom, EQ 25.014 angstrom; Z = 3. All compounds belong to the Ba3Yb4O9 type. The Ln positions of compound 3 are statistically occupied by Y3+ and Yb3+. This structure type is characterized by Ln(2)O6 and Ln(4)O6 octahedral planes and two-dimensional Kagome nets formed by Ln(1) and Ln(3).
