Risk-based model aids selection of pipeline inspection, maintenance strategies

A risk-based model has been developed to monitor pipeline condition. The model uses analytical hierarchy process (AHP), a multiple attribute decision-making technique, to identify factors that influence failure on specific segments and to analyse their effects by determining the probabilities of risk factors. The methodology is described and a case study illustrating its use for a 1,500-km crude oil pipeline in India is presented. The pipeline had a history of corrosion failure. The results of the analysis were used to decide specific inspection and maintenance programmes for each pipeline segment. The advantages and disadvantages of the technique are outlined.
