Structural transformations occurring in flame-sprayed Ni60Nb40 alloy coatings during heating in the presence of oxygen

Ni-Nb alloy coatings of thicknesses up to 250 um, applied by plasma-arc spraying to a copper plate, were investigated to determine structural transformations during heating in the presence of oxygen. X-ray diffraction exhibited intense haloes characteristic of amorphous materials and crystalline inclusions of niobium oxide. Crystallization occurred at 750° K through the formation of niobium oxide and the precipitation of nickel. Decomposition of the amorphous matrix was accompanied by a decrease in length of the coatings.
