The response of a nonlinear device whose input-output characteristic is represented by an error function is analyzed for a noiselike input signal from two viewpoints. One viewpoint is to utilize the device as a limiter in an angular-modulation system, and the other is to utilize it as a common nonlinear amplifier for multiple carrier waves, such as used in satellite repeater systems. Generalized expressions for the input-output characteristics in these two applications are derived. Then the improvement in carrier-to-noise ratio is discussed for the limiter and the effect of undesired output, including the overall distortion of the multiple carrier wave, is discussed for the amplifier.
