A simple device is described for obtaining temperatures in the 4. 2-300 degree K range by the method of blowing a jet of cold vapor having a controllable temperature past the sample. The device consists of an insert for a liquid optical cryostat and a special siphon, and allows operation under conditions of considerable heat influx to the sample (up to 0. 8 W) for which direct measurement of the temperature of the sample is difficult. Judging from the anomaly in the absorption spectrum of a KDy(MoO//4)//2 crystal, the error in determining the temperature does not exceed 2 degree K at the 10-14 degree K level.
