EQUIPMENT TO MONITOR TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR.

A description is given of a portable automatic data logger for traffic studies which can collect sufficient information to enable an analysis to be made from a three-lane highway of vehicle flow, speedheadway, vehicle length and a length-based classification. The process from site data collection to a comprehensive summary of results is completely automatic using a punched paper tape input to computer programs. The mechanism of data collection and analysis is described together with the associated inductive loops. The paper concludes by giving an example of control tests to check the accuracy of the automatically collected data.
