Many theories exist about what constitutes a first-rate plant safety program. However, certain elements are common to all. For any program to succeed, it must encourage each employee in the company to willingly accept responsibility for his own safety. In return, the employee must know that his efforts to work safely are supported by the company. The final measure of a program's success is a reduction in accident frequency and severity. Achieving those goals requires the right safety director, a workable safety policy, and an active safety committee, among other essentials.
