The use of LISP-based environment is considered to achieve improvement in programming productivity. One area in which LISP tools are paying off is software development for computer-aided engineering, particularly in VLSI applications. Some developers are claiming fifty-fold improvement in time-to-market cycles over environments using, for example, VAX and Daisy workstations. This article, the third in a 3-part series on LISP programming tools, examines three VLSI packages, demonstrates their most significant features, and shows how LISP tools helped speed their development.
