A new physical phenomenon, called gaseous collapse, is established which consists in spontaneous gas saturation of the intermolecular space of the coal material during rapid changes in the stressed state of the coal seams near a mine working. The critical values of the rock and gas pressures at which spontaneous saturation of the coal material with gas occurs are determined. In zones of tectonic preparation of coal seams and during the formation of a plastic zone near mine workings regions with different gas capacities and thus with different coal swelling sorption stresses are formed. The nonuniformity of the stress distribution on sections where mine work is being carried out increases as a result of differences in the physical properties of gas-saturated and degassed coals. (
