REVIEW OF AMBIENT AIR MONITORING AND EMISSION CONTROL AT NEWCASTLE STEELWORKS.

Emission control involves not only particulates but also sulfur oxides (SO//x), nitrous oxides (NO//x), hydrocarbons, fluoride (F), ozone (O//3) and trace metals. Methods of analysis, and current ambient data are summarized in this paper. Point source emissions, e. g. stack emissions, contribute to ambient conditions, and to minimize the effect, emission control equipment must be installed. This equipment is wide-ranging in design and depends on the stream to be treated. The emphasis in the Newcastle Steelworks of BHP Company Limited is on the reduction of particulate emissions; the equipment used to control these emissions is located throughout the works area and is discussed in detail.
