SANITARY LANDFILL SITE SELECTION BY REMOTE SENSING.

Major cities in Harris, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Liberty and Montgomery Counties around Houston, Texas were analyzed for future growth and potential sanitary landfill sites with the aid of remotely sensed information. The investigation involved an interdisciplinary effort, utilizing a wide variety of information with regard to population forecasting, soil and geological conditions, drainage, social and economic conditions, aerial photography, and infrared color transparencies. Locations of existing sanitary landfills from the Texas Department of Health Resources and standard sanitary landfill practice were reviewed. The purpose of the study focused on new evaluation techniques for comparing potential sanitary landfill sites in a heavily urbanized region.
