A quantitatively defined quality criterion for test signals - an information criterion - is formulated and the principles for optimizing the measurement and control processes are determined. The most characteristic sections of actual television (TV) signals were selected as standard test signal elements. The main criteria for selecting the test signals included their sensitivity to identified distortions in oscilloscope measurements and ease of signal generation.
