COOLANTS FOR GRINDING WITH DIAMOND IMPREGNATED WHEELS.

A research program was undertaken by the Diamond Research Laboratory concerned with grinding sintered carbide using both metal coated and uncoated diamond grit. In all cases where rate of metal removal was important the best results were obtained with Syntilo 3 as coolant. One important finding was that the 100% better metal removal rates claimed for metal clad grits can always be obtained when the coolant is Syntilo 3 but that this is not necessarily so with other coolants. Further research into the effects of choice of coolant when diamond grinding constructional steels and cast iron found that for these materials a heavy duty high lubricity soluble oil was better and Superedge 4 Blue gave outstanding results. This article discusses coolants, fields of lubrication, and types of grinding coolants.
