Piping generally constitutes about 25 to 35 per cent of the material costs of a process plant, requires about 40 percent of the erection labor, and consumes approximately 50 per cent of the total engineering man hours. Yet, little thought has been given to the quality and reliability of the overall piping system. Some topics discussed are the following: the need to consider quality and reliability of the system; problems in maintaining quality and reliability; failure mode effects and critical analysis; and some concluding remarks.
