In 1996, a distributed control system (DCS) was installed at the Fairfield Works powerhouse, replacing a host of 1980s vintage analog electronic controls. The new DCS enables much improved control of boilers which produce the cold blast for the No.8 blast furnace as well steam for plantwide use and for turbines used to generate in-plant power. Quantifying return on investment over the three-year operating period through 1999 is difficult because of changes in the costs of purchased power and natural gas. Overall, there has been a substantial reduction in the use of natural gas and a significant drop in the amount of purchased power.
