A new wavelet-based instrumental method for measuring print mottle

A wavelet-besed technique for measuring print mottle has been developed, which partitions print mottle into its components as a function of scale. For 31 sheets of uncoated fine paper, print mottle instrumental determination was correlated to visual perception. The highest correlation was found at 8 mm scale, with a R2 value of 0.71. Thus the method was validated and can be used as an accurate predictor of human perception.
