Through a study of Na corrosion of an Al//2O//3/Nb seal interface, it is shown that the main factor influencing the seal and the lifetime of a high pressure natrium lamp is the interface bonding between the glass seal and Nb. The microstructure of the interface has been studied by means of TEM. Based on a thermodynamic analysis and the J. A. Pask theory of metal/ceramic interface bonding, the physicochemical process of glass seal/Nb interfaces and the bonding mechanism during sealing is discussed.
