Some features of industrial crystallizers are discussed with particular reference to their hydrodynamic and other transport characteristics. Most of the specific examples considered are related to the prediction of crystal size distribution. They include the effect of liquid mixing on precipitation processes, the suspension and distribution of crystals within crystallizers and the mechanism and scale-up of secondary nucleation. A number of analogies are also drawn between the behavior of crystallizers and chemical reactors.
