Pressurized water reactors are designed to cope with a wide range of plant transients ranging from frequent events such as changes in operating conditions to highly improbable events such as severe accidents. This paper discusses the classification of these transient events. As an example of the response of a pressurized water reactor to one type of severe accident, the sequences of events following a large-break and a small-break loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) are described.
