Rotational alignment in associative desorption of H2 from Pd(100)

The rotational alignment of H2 desorbing from a Pd(100) surface has been studied using VUV-laser induced fluorescence. The fluorescence intensity on a specific rovibronic transition is registered for the electric vector of the probe laser parallel and perpendicular to the surface normal. For H2 molecules desorbing from Pd in (v″ = 0), a positive alignment for the rotational quantum numbers J″ = 1-7 is observed. The experimental data agree within the experimental uncertainties with theoretical results based on six-dimensional quantum dynamical calculations.
