SUS304 is widely used in the outdoor environment. However, more resistant steels are required in regions exposed to sea-salt particles. The atmospheric corrosion generally consists of pitting and crevice corrosion. These forms of corrosion suggest that improvement of localized corrosion resistance under Cl** minus environments will lead to the improvement of atmospheric corrosion resistance. In this study, the effect of the alloying elements N, Mn and Cr on atmospheric corrosion was investigated. The test steels contained 0. 03%C, 0. 4%Si, 0. 5%Mo, 1%Mn, 8-11%Ni, 18-20%Cr, 0. 4 3%Cu and 0. 01-0. 2%N. The results indicate that an increase of Cr, decrease of Mn, and addition of N are beneficial to improvement in atmospheric corrosion resistance.
