The Department of Energy's Fossil Energy Coal Preparation Research and Development Program has made significant technical accomplishments in the areas of microcharacterization, chemical benefaction, physical benefaction and comminution. Its goal is to develop coal preparation technology to reduce the ash and sulfur content of U. S. coals so that the product can be formulated into a high quality fuel that could replace oil and/or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications.
