Ice-making thermal storage is among many economic elements incorporated in the air-conditioning/heating system of the two-million square foot complex. A most important criterion for HVAC loads is a watts per square foot allowance for such appliances as distributed computer terminals, word processors, etc. This, together with lighting loads, comprises a substantial part of the cooling system load. The building design decisions arose from a number of comprehensive studies and reports prepared by various members of the design team. Many of the studies included the use of the computerized annual energy program, DOE 2. 1, as well as the principals of value engineering and life-cycle costing.
