New sesquiterpene from Drimys winterii

During an investigation of the Chilean medicinal plant Drimys winterii a new sesquiterpene with the drimane skeleton named drimendiol was isolated. This sesquiterpene was optically active ([α]D = -5.4°, CHCl3; c. 0.81) and is probably a biosynthetic precursor of the major sesquiterpene found in the hexane extract, (-)-polygoidal. In this paper, mass spectroscopy, H-NMR, 13C-NMR and FTIR data for drimendiol are presented.
