The UK fast reactor development program is reviewed, from the decision to build the Dounreay Fast Reactor, via the Prototype Fast Reactor now in operation at Dounreay, to current plans for building a commerical scale demonstration plant. Fast reactors offer a means of increasing (by a factor of about 60) the electrical energy produced from available uranium supplies. The UK experience has confirmed that commerical exploitation is now technically feasible.
