Approximate models by the Method of Weighted Residuals (MWR) are given for monotubular, parallel flow, counter flow, and multipass heat exchangers, the mathematical models of which are described by hyperbolic partial differential equations. In a frequency domain study, the MWR compares favorably with the finite difference method in that the results of MWR are accurate and require less computatiuon time. Also, comparisons between poles and zeros of MWR models and exact models show that the poles and zeros of the approximate model do not necessarily approximate the poles and zeros of the original system.
