This paper discusses a technique for estimating the sensitivity of the frustrated-total-internal-reflection method as applied to the problem of detecting small amounts of substances on objects. The technique has been experimentally certified on a device for detecting trace quantities of explosive substances. © 2010 Optical Society of America.
