Low-temperature site-selective luminescence spectroscopy demonstrates that combustion synthesis can substitute Eu3+ for Al3+ in α-Al2O3; despite the large size discrepancy between these ions. The optical spectral features observed are commensurate with C3v site symmetry of Eu3+. A comparative discussion is included with other preparation methods. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved;
