Preparation and mechanical properties of ternary Ti-Cu-Ni bulk metallic glasses

The bulk metallic glass (BMG) with a diameter of 2 mm at least has been successfully fabricated by a conventional Cu-mold casting method for Ti50Cu42Ni8 alloy. The glass-forming ability (GFA), the thermal stability and mechanical properties have been investigated for the ternary Ti50Cu50-xNix (x=5, 8, 11) alloys by XRD, DSC and SEM. The results show that the Ti50Cu42Ni8 BMG exhibits a wide undercooled liquid region Δ Tx of 57 K, a high reduced glass transition temperature Trg of 0.565 and a compressive fracture strength of 2008 MPa.
