The issues of the genesis and development of design ontology as a scientific direction are considered, including research of the conceptual apparatus of the subject area and the development of a thesaurus based on it, analysis of the principles to form criteria and models of the designed object, selection of design methods and scenarios, collection and processing of information about the object. The design ontology explores and formalizes the knowledge of design subjects about the process of designing new or modernized artifacts. The work presents the composition of the concept of scientific direction, including origins, key terms, and concepts, scientific basis and boundaries, mechanism of formation and development, as well as effect; a scheme for the formation of the scientific direction design ontology based on the achievements of design experience in advanced subject areas, its translation into other areas; object design methodology. Examples are given of the application of the developed methodology in creating information systems for various subject areas and types of activities: preliminary design of an aircraft, ontology of a machine-building enterprise, museum design, precision agriculture, etc. Ontological modeling of subject areas and problems solved in them allows developers of information systems to consider the real picture of processes in the subject areas, coordinate the connections between entities in it, reasonably approach the composition of the attributes of the entities, and ultimately obtain an adequate result of the operation of information systems.
