Preparation and optical properties of Co2+-doped Li2O-Ga2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics

Transparent glass-ceramics containing Co2+:LiGa5O8 nanocrystals were prepared by heating the gel with composition of 4Li2O-8Ga2O3-88SiO2-0.2CoO (LGS) (mol%). When the heat-treatment temperature was 800 °C; the samples crystallized to LiGa5O8 nanocrystals with the size of 6 nm and exhibited a broad absorption band near 1500 nm; which is characteristic of tetrahedral Co2+ ions in crystals. The emission in the visible and near infrared (NIR) region was observed from the glass-ceramics and attributed to the 4T1(4P) &rarr 4A2(4F) and 4T1(4P) &rarr 4T2(4F) transitions of tetrahedral Co2+; respectively. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
