This publication shows how the contact mechanics In spot-welded joints influence the structural dynamics based on the example of a specimen. The results of these tests will shortly be transferred to a full vehicle at MAGNA STEYR Fahrzeugtechnik. The development aimed at calculation processes and calculation models that are able to simulate the movements in joints (mainly of a non-linear characteristic). The calculation tool applied was the Finite-Element simulation tool Abaqus. For comparing the calculation variants with the measurement, natural frequencies, damping (particularly at the joints), transfer functions and mode shapes were used. Ten specimens were manufactured in order to analyze the impact of the spread resulting from manufacture and measurement. The test results show very good correlation between the measurements and the developed calculation models, in which linearized contact was taken into account.
