Preparation and characterization of amine-functionalized polypropylene

The amine-protected monomer {1-methyl-1[3-(1-methylethylenyl)phenyl]ethyl}-carbamic acid 1, 1-dimethylethyl ester (TMITBC) was prepared and grafted onto polypropylene (PP) backbone and the deprotection processing was used to obtain the amine-functionalized PP. The effect of TMITBC content on the grafting ratio of TMITBC was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). The rheological, thermal and hydrophilic properties of the functionalized PPs were analyzed in detail. The results show that TMITBC is successfully grafted onto the PP backbone. With the increase of TMITBC content, the grafting ratio increases first and then decreases. The complex viscosity of the functionalized PPs changes very slightly with low TMITBC contents, and considerably reduces with high TMITBC contents. Meanwhile, the zero shear viscosity of the amine-functionalized PPs is higher than that of corresponding TMITBC-functionalized PP. Besides, functional PPs have higher crystallization temperature and lower melting temperature compared with pure PP. The hydrophilicity of amine-functionalized PP is superior to that of pure PP and corresponding TMITBC-functionalized PP. ©, 2015, Chengdu University of Science and Technology. All right reserved.
