This article discusses emergency planning, focusing on site entrance modifications and site familiarity for emergency responders to enhance their response times. General considerations discussed include: conducting plant site tours for fire and law enforcement agencies to gain site familiarity; secured boxes containing critical maps, emergency contact phone numbers, access keys or magnetic cards, and Material Safety Data Sheets; direct radio communication or panic alarms worn and activated by operators; identifying risks and types of situations that could occur; and, training, reviewing, and practicing the emergency plan. © 2008 American Water Works Association.
