Economical and ecological interests as well as legal regulations also call for evaluating and improving energy efficiency of machine tools. As a result, within the research project 'e-SimPro' were developed theory models that simulate energy demand for certain function modules of machine tools and realized those models as practically used software tools. Objective was to quantify component related energy demand for the use cases 'Design in the early development phase' and 'Simulating energy consumption for specific production tasks', in order to derive specific measures for improving energy efficiency. Siemens research activities within this project will be presented in this article.
