Breaking the ice

A Guide provided by ABS society of USA for the considerations required for vessels operating in low temperature environments is presented. Guidance is provided for the preparation of the vessels and other marine structures and their crew for operation in harsh environments. This Guide does not include requirements related to hull strengthening and machinery requirements which are covered by existing ice class rules. The sections of the guide include materials, welds and coatings, hull construction and equipment, vessel systems and machinery, safety systems, and crew considerations. It also includes training and related documentation, weather conditions, vessel operations, ABS notations, and flag administrations contact list. Each section of the has a corresponding appendix providing additional resource material to help the designer in meeting the Guide's requirements.
